Using the backdrop of San Francisco, Yung traces the vibrant history of Chinese American women who arrived at the turn of the century as the property of their husbands or even as slaves, and through the decades leading up to World War II developed into active members of the American society.
Especially noteworthy for Yung’s wide use of personal oral histories, as well as her own family stories.
