The Zigzag Way by Anita Desai [in AsianWeek]

Zigzag WayAn interesting departure for Desai, who turns to Mexico to tell the story of a hapless Boston graduate student who accompanies his ambitious girlfriend abroad. While wandering, he discovers a lost part of his own family history that includes British grandparents who worked in the mines of a remote Mexican village. The novel is filled with diverse voices that provide the details of a history that young Eric can only partially ever know.
