A groundbreaking history of Asian Americans in the U.S. during the last 150 years, told predominantly through the actual narratives of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Asian Indian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian immigrants. These Asian Americans – from fourth-generation Chinese Americans to recently arrived Hmong refugees – continue to be perceived as “strangers,” even in the place they call “home.”
While Takaki has been justly criticized for presenting others’ research as his own, Strangers remains one the of most widely used history textbooks throughout classrooms today.
