Mistaken Identity by Nayantara Sahgal [in What Do I Read Next? Multicultural Literature]

Mistaken IdentityIn 1929, Bhusan Singh, the aimless son of a wealthy raja, is on a train headed for his family home when he is arrested, falsely charged with treason, and imprisoned. Efforts to free him fail; over the next three years, he relives his life, in his memory and through tales he shares with his captive Communist cell mates.

The prodigious author Naghal, born in 1927, is a Wellesley-educated, independently outspoken member of India’s politically powerful Nehru/Gandhi family. She is cousin to the assassinated Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She was one of India’s earliest female authors writing in English to receive international recognition.
