Life Reimagined: The Science, Art, and Opportunity of Midlife by Barbara Bradley Hagerty [in Library Journal]
*STARRED REVIEW
At the risk of sounding utterly selfish, thank goodness Barbara Bradley Hagerty (Fingerprints of God) recovered from her excruciating throat injury to narrate her latest title. Her conspiratorial, gregarious recitation, a skill that clearly contributed to her two-decade, award-winning NPR career, instantly convinces listeners she’s their new best friend, and they’ll be willing to believe whatever she tells them.
Combining superb research skills with mesmerizing storytelling, Hagerty disproves the so-called “midlife crisis” and shows how to take advantage of the limitless possibilities of one’s later years, from nurturing important relationships, feeding our brains, pivoting on strengths to accomplish our next goals, finding purpose as a means to lasting happiness, and more.
Sharing her personal experiences, including a two-week RV adventure through the mountains, suffering through “brain training,” taking up biking after arthritis took away her running and making it to the Senior Olympics, even quitting her beloved job, Hagerty proves she’s the ideal coconspirator in discovering life reimagined.
Verdict: Although intended for audiences of ‘a certain age,’ younger readers in the midst of transition – college, even high school, graduates – would do well to follow Hagerty’s witty, insightful, entertaining guidance toward a more fulfilling future.
