Eight Million Gods and Demons by Hiroko Sherwin [in AsianWeek]

Eight Million Gods and DemonsA family saga, set in Meiji Japan of the 1880s to the end of World War II, that weaves together the country’s tumultuous history with the story of one man’s family, the two women he loves, and the children who are born of those relationships.

Incidentally, Sherwin’s daughter, Mako Yoshikawa, is also a writer. Her novel, Once Removed, was included in the June 27 issue of New and Notable Books. Certainly, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – and it’s most interesting to read their acknowledgement pages together.
